Pico Laser
(Picosecond Laser)

Picosecond laser delivers ultra-short pulses of light energy to target pigment within the skin — used for sunspots, freckles, melasma support, pores, and overall skin tone improvement. Picosecond is a laser-technology class — multiple device brands are available.

What is picosecond laser treatment?

Picosecond laser delivers laser energy in ultra-short pulses measured in picoseconds (trillionths of a second). This speed is up to 100 times faster than traditional Q-switched nanosecond lasers, creating a photomechanical effect that physically shatters pigment particles without generating significant heat in surrounding tissue.

At IVI Medical Clinic, we use a medical-grade picosecond laser platform capable of delivering multiple wavelengths (532nm, 1064nm) to target different depths of pigmentation and skin concerns with precision.

What does it treat?

  • Sunspots and age spots (solar lentigines)
  • Melasma and hormonal pigmentation
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) from acne
  • Freckles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Tattoo removal
  • Overall skin brightening and rejuvenation

The Procedure

Each session takes 30–45 minutes. A topical anaesthetic cream is applied 20–30 minutes before treatment for comfort. The laser handpiece is moved systematically over the treatment area, delivering precise pulses of energy.

During treatment, you may feel a mild snapping sensation, similar to a rubber band flick. Post-treatment, the skin typically looks slightly red and flushed — this settles within a few hours to a day.

How many sessions do I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on the type and depth of pigmentation. Sunspots and surface pigmentation often respond well in 2–3 sessions. Deeper concerns like melasma or significant PIH typically require 4–6 sessions, spaced 3–6 weeks apart.

Our doctors will assess your skin at consultation and give you a realistic treatment plan and timeline based on your specific concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the treatment hurt? +
With topical numbing cream applied beforehand, most patients find the treatment very tolerable. You will feel warmth and a mild snapping sensation during treatment. The discomfort is typically rated 2–3 out of 10.
How long is the downtime? +
Downtime is minimal compared to older lasers. Most patients experience redness for a few hours. Some pigmented spots may appear darker (a "frosting" effect) before gradually flaking off over 5–7 days — this is normal and expected.
Will my pigmentation come back? +
Treated pigmentation can recur with sun exposure, hormonal changes, or other triggers. Diligent sun protection is essential post-treatment. We provide personalised aftercare advice and a sun protection protocol with each treatment.
Is it safe for all skin tones? +
Picosecond laser is suitable for a wide range of Fitzpatrick skin types, including the darker skin tones common in Singapore and Southeast Asia. The low thermal effect of picosecond technology makes it generally more skin-tone-tolerant than older nanosecond lasers.
